Online Vocal Lessons - Learn In Your Own Time At Your Own Pace

There are some singers who proudly declare that they have never had a singing lesson in their lives and can still sing just fine. It's great that people are singing of course and they can usually sing quite well...... if you ignore some of the basics such as breath control, tone, vocal agility and projection.

From our point of view, we suggest that if singers look at online vocal lessons they could be twice as good as they are now. After all, most successful sportsmen and women go through extensive technical training to get themselves to a higher level, and singing is a similar body activity. At this point, people usually start to realize that perhaps they could improve by taking some online vocal lessons so that they can look after their vocal health, and consequently become better singers with less effort.

Just to get the ball rolling, we've put together a few ideas to help you realize that with time, effort and consistency you too can realize your singing potential regardless of your ability.Your Vocal Health.

The voice, just like any other part of your body, needs care and maintenance in order for it to function properly throughout your singing life. Think about it. If you're a runner, you need to make sure your feet and legs are in good shape. If you're a weight trainer then your back, arm, leg and chest muscles must be able to work at maximum capacity, especially for competitions. The same applies to swimming, tennis and other sports.

Why are we mentioning sports personnel? Well, singing is a bodily activity in the same way that a sport is - in other words they heavily use parts of the body that allow you to play. Without healthy vocal equipment your voice will not be reliable, and will not do all the things that you want it to do on a regular basis.

We Breathe - You Breathe

The first and most important part of your vocal training is the ability to control your voice through proper breathing. To do this you cannot avoid doing some breathing exercises every day. So what does this mean? As you know, your breathing equipment consists of your lungs and a large, strong muscle beneath them called the DIAPHRAGM*.

It is this muscle that you have to learn to control as it in turn controls the movement of air through your lungs. The process is very simple:

  • Air drawn in through the mouth

  • Lungs expand and diaphragm* drops

  • Air out through the mouth

  • Lungs contract and diaphragm* rises

*DIAPHRAGM = a thin dome-shaped muscle which separates the lungs and heart from the intestines, stomach, liver, etc. It is involved in respiration, drawing downward in the chest on inhalation, and pushing upward in exhalation, and is critical to good singing.

Beginners Breath Control Exercise #1

  • Lie on the floor on your back.

  • Place a reasonably heavy book on your tummy above the belly button.

  • Exhale fully through your mouth.

  • Inhale slowly through your mouth feeling the resistance of the book on your tummy.

Repeat this in sets of at least three, 3 times each day for 3 days (3-3-3).

After this minimal 3 day workout, you should notice a difference in the control ability of your diaphragm muscle. Many people who haven't had the advantage of vocal lessons, breathe poorly. They breathe from the chest which is called shallow breathing, and not only is unhealthy but won't help support your voice.

Belly Laughs

This next exercise is one of the crazier ones that works really well for future projection of your voice. Some people will say that as they sing with a mic they don't need to project. This is simply not true. A sound system only distributes the sound that it is given, so if you have poor projection and therefore poor sound quality, then that is exactly what the audience will hear when you sing or speak..

It's a very simple exercise:

Say the word "Ha" and pull your tummy in at the same time.

Do this exercise no more than 6/7 times as it can tire your voice if you overdo it. It's great for projection as well as interacting with strengthening your diaphragm muscle.

As you get more proficient at it you will be able to do multiple "Ha" sounds (Ha Ha, Ha Ha Ha, etc.)
